Sweating, gasping, totally focused and intense.
That was the scene at the erg competition run by
Philadelphia City Rowing (PCR) as some 300 rowers from middle school age to their 70s competed.
Some of the 300 or so competitors from dozens of schools traveled to the Philadelphia Indoor Classic from as far away as Newburgh, NY and Baltimore.
This was the second time that PCR has held the event as a way to bring community and competition to the sport of rowing in the off-season and hopefully raise money to support the city kids they teach to row and mentor.
Sitting in the bleachers were proud parents and alumni of the 10 year old organization that has trained thousands of kids to row. Last year alone some 425 middle and high school students participated in the program — and won medals in regattas on the Schuylkill River.
Scenes from the event, held at the city’s School of the Future, show on their faces the effort the students brought to their races.
Philadelphia City Rowing is a 501(c)(3) worth supporting.
